Liposuction in Miami

In his Miami Beach practice, Dr. Rian Maercks uses traditional and advanced liposuction techniques to help patients achieve a more slim silhouette through the removal of diet and exercise-resistant fat deposits.

  • Body slimming that can be performed almost anywhere
  • Fat will not return to the area

Liposuction in Miami is not a weight-loss alternative, but rather a method for slimming specific areas of the body. It is a popular procedure in the US with nearly 200,000 liposuction surgeries performed in 2009, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Who Should Consider Liposuction?

For many individuals who have gone through the process of exercising and dieting to lose weight, the remaining fat can provide quite the headache. These patients can often turn to liposuction as a means to eradicate the body fat they wish to lose that could not be shed through their weight-loss routine.

In Miami, liposuction can be performed on individuals who are at a healthy, stable weight with good skin elasticity for the following specific purposes: body contouring, breast reduction, tummy tuck, arm lift, body lift, and facial rejuvenation.

The Surgical Process

When liposuction surgery is performed, it can take anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, largely depending on the area to be liposuctioned. For patients undergoing liposuction on a small, localized area, a local anesthetic will be administered for the comfort of the patient, while the patient will be placed under general anesthetic for liposuction procedures on larger areas. First, small incisions are made in the targeted areas to be liposuctioned. In tumescent liposuction, the solution (containing an anesthetic) infiltrates the fat, firming it and making it easier to remove. A small tube is then inserted through the incisions and the fat to be removed is vacuumed out. During this procedure, fluids are lost, but replenished intravenously.

Newer liposuction techniques are assisted by a wide variety of different technologies. Laser liposuction, ultrasound-assisted liposuction and even water-assisted liposuction are now available to patients who undergo body contouring. During your consultation, Dr. Maercks can discuss the merits of each of these modalities and help determine the best procedure for meeting your specific goals.

Life Post-Liposuction in Miami

For about two days following liposuction surgery, the patient will have a small tube inserted under the skin to drain any fluid build-up in the skin. For two to three weeks after surgery, the patient will wear compression garments to control swelling and help the skin to contract. The patient may also be advised to walk around shortly after the liposuction procedure.

Liposuction does have some possible side effects including burning, numbness, swelling, infection, healing delays and formation of blood or fat clots; the greater the removal of fat, the greater the risk of these side effects or complications. The patient may also be prescribed medications following treatment to manage any discomfort.
