Who Should Consider Calf Augmentation?
Calf augmentation (or calf implants) is an option for patients who want to enhance the shape of their lower leg. Calf augmentation may be performed for cosmetic purposes or to correct a shrunken lower leg. The procedure, which is less common in the U.S. than in South America and Mexico, is performed when an implant is placed on the inner or outer calf.
Patients who elect to have calf augmentation surgery may struggle with a calf that is disproportionate to their thigh, or is naturally thin, and does not respond to exercise; this may include bodybuilders who want more contour in their calves. Additionally, patients who have suffered an injury or disease in their leg may elect to have calf augmentation to correct any shrinkage or loss of muscle tone.
The Surgical Process
Prior to calf augmentation surgery, the doctor may use calf implants inside stockings to simulate a desired result for the patient. When the procedure is performed, the leg is shaved and an antibacterial solution is applied. The surgery is then performed under local or general anesthesia. An incision of approximately 4cm is made in the “knee pit.” A pocket is then created on top of the calf muscle and a silicone implant is inserted. If the patient is to undergo reconstructive calf augmentation, some tissue expansion may be required.
Life After Calf Augmentation in Miami
After calf augmentation surgery, the patient should expect two to three weeks of total downtime. Bed rest, with the legs elevated, may be expected for about 12 hours. The patient may also be expected to wear loose-wrap gauze over the incision site for seven days. After the gauze is removed, the patient will then wear compression garments for up to five weeks. Any pain or discomfort the patient may feel may be reduced through medication.
Calf augmentation surgery has some possible side effects and complications including hematoma, seroma, edema, changes in sensation, scarring, visible implant and tightening of scar tissue.
