Men who experience excess breast tissue may be ideal candidates for male breast reduction in Miami. The procedure, which utilizes both liposuction and excision, was performed on more than 17,000 men in the U.S. in 2009. An excess of breast tissue in men is a condition called gynecomastia, a hormonal problem. Possible causes of gynecomastia include impaired liver function, testosterone deficiency, and the use of estrogen-containing medications or anabolic steroids. For many men and some adolescent boys, this is an embarrassing problem.

The excess breast tissue can be a combination of fat and glandular tissue and may be sensitive or tender. The most ideal patients for male breast reduction are non-smokers at a stable, healthy weight.

The Surgical Process

Prior to surgery, the doctor will consult with the patient to determine possible causes for the excess breast tissue. If the problem can be solved through lifestyle changes, the doctor will prescribe those changes. An MRI or mammogram may also be performed to determine the breast composition.

The procedure itself takes one hour or more to complete. A large tissue removal will require the patient be under general anesthesia, while a smaller removal may be performed under local anesthesia. An incision is then made around the nipple or in the underarm. Tissue is then removed through excision, liposuction or a combination of both. Major fat removal may necessitate skin removal for good contour.

Life After Male Breast Reduction in Miami

After the male breast reduction surgery, the chest is wrapped in gauze. The area will have stitches, which can be removed in one to two weeks. The patient may be able to return to work after one week, but should avoid exercise for about three weeks. The patient may experience swelling, bruising and discomfort and any pain will be managed through medication. It will take about three months of healing for the patient to see the final result and it will be long-lasting given the patient adheres to a healthy lifestyle.

Some complications are associated with male breast reduction surgery and may include visible scars, permanent pigment changes, mismatched breasts or nipples, infection, excessive bleeding or fluid loss or accumulation.
