Body Contouring in Miami

In his Miami Beach practice, Dr. Rian Maercks performs body contouring procedures for women and men who have lost a significant amount of weight and struggle with excess skin.
  • Removes unwanted skin and fat
  • Tightens and firms skin
  • Gives the body an improved contour

Following a dramatic weight loss, many patients find their bodies do not match the ideal they desired, despite weighing significantly less. In these cases, patients often turn to body contouring as a means to correct loose, hanging skin and form their bodies into the desired contours. Surgery reduces unwanted skin and fat in specific areas where elasticity is insufficient.

Oftentimes, patients who have undergone bariatric surgery (gastric band and gastric bypass) will elect to have body contouring surgery. Body contouring may address loose skin on the following areas: face, neck and jowls, upper arms, breasts, abdominal area, buttocks, groin and thighs.

Body contouring in Miami is ideally performed on patients who have achieved a stable body weight. Potential patients must also be non-smokers who have realistic expectations and are committed to a healthy lifestyle.

The Surgical Process

Before the surgery, Dr. Maercks will discuss possible procedures, expectations for the surgery and what outcomes the patient can expect. When the doctor is ready to move forward with the body contouring procedure, it is usually performed under general anesthesia, though local anesthesia and sedation may be used in some cases. The excess skin and fat are removed and the shape and tone of the underlying tissue is improved. Common plastic surgery procedures include: arm lift, tummy tuck, body lift, thigh lift, buttock lift and liposuction.

Life After Body Contouring in Miami

After the procedures are completed, the areas on which surgery was performed will be wrapped in bandages to aid in healing and minimize swelling. Tubes may be inserted into the area to drain any fluid build-up. Initial healing may take one to two weeks and some movements may be restricted for several weeks following the procedure.

Some complications can be associated with body contouring and may include bleeding, infection, fluid accumulation, delayed or poor healing, skin loss, blood clots, excessive or widened scars, numbness and other changes in skin sensation, and irregular or asymmetric scars.
